Seattle Cider Company
Seattle, WA
Serving delicious cider and the community
What if I told you that you could sip on a crisp, refreshing cider while helping a local nonprofit
fight food insecurity? Seattle Cider Company has you covered through their partnership
with City Fruit, a nonprofit in Seattle dedicated to addressing hunger across the area by
donating harvested fruits to community programs for families in need.
City Fruit works by harvesting apples from the Seattle urban canopy, meaning the apples are
from local planters who have grown more apples than they need. The nonprofit then sends out
volunteers to harvest the apples and Seattle Cider Company takes the apples they can’t use,
like bruised and crab apples, as a part of their partnership.
Maura Hardman, public relations and marketing manager for Seattle Cider Company, said this
partnership results in a seasonal cider named “City Fruit.” The City Fruit apples are pressed inhouse,
processed into a cider, sold to customers, and the proceeds are then donated back to
City Fruit’s numerous programs.
“It’s interesting because the cider is different every year because we don’t know what apple
varieties we’re going to get,” Hardman said. “It’s usually a combination of more than 40
different kinds of apples, and it’s the truest Seattle cider that we make because all of the apples
are sourced from Seattle.”
You can find Seattle Cider Company inside The Woods, a SoDo tasting room shared with Two
Beers Brewing and Sound Craft Seltzer. There, you can taste ciders, beers, seltzers and try some
of Bread and Circuses’ burgers, gnocchi tots and chicken wings with miso ranch.

Seattle Cider Company is another much-loved go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 45 Yelp reviews. Head

Room, which offers unique, handcrafted brews. Seattle Cider says it’s “bringing true craft cider
back to Seattle and across the country,” and aims to bridge the gap between wine and beer
with flavorful, small-batch cider, per its website. This spot’s cider can be found across the
United States and internationally. Look for staples such as dry hard cider, semi sweet cider,
Tangerine Tumeric and Basil Mint.
The Cap Times – Salud! Flowers, wine barrels and berries give hard apple ciders a rosy
hue – 6/21/2018
Two of our options came from Seattle Cider Co., including my personal favorite. The 2016
Gravenstein Rosé ($9.99/500 mL) gets its dark magenta color from mourvedre red wine barrels,
and the little bit of tannin with the fruity apple balanced just right.
Both the Seattle Cider Berry Rosé ($3.79/16 oz. can) and our locally made cider, One
Barrel “Gentry’s Own” Rosé Cider ($1.79/12 oz. can) veered toward sweet apple flavors.
Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries give the berry cider a dark pink color, but it was much
less complex and interesting than its Gravenstein cousin.
We looked for color-giving ingredients, and found everything from rose and hibiscus petals
(Crispin), aging in red wine barrels (Seattle Cider Company) to the juice of cherries, berries and
currants.

percent ABV)

Sprudge – 6 Delicious Coffee Beers From Uppers & Downers 2017- 3/15/2017
And it wasn’t just about the beer; we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how well coffee works
with cider. The sweetness of the cider plays against the coffee in a fun way, pushing it past the
fruitiness of something like a coffee IPA. Seattle Cider Company’s semi-sweet cider blended
with a cold-brewed Costa Rican coffee from Fulcrum Coffee was a welcome diversion from the
heavier, darker beers of the day. And what’s more, it was made with decaf—admittedly less
upper, but there was more than enough to go around already.

The Woods
(SoDo, 4700 Ohio Ave. S; 206.762.0492; seattlecidercompany.com) Located in an industrial
complex in SoDo, The Woods serves as the 21-and-older tasting room for Seattle Cider
Company and its sister company, Two Beers Brewing. The expansive space, with polished
concrete floors and custom-made wood tables and chairs, sprawls onto the loading dock, with
outdoor seating beneath a large pergola fashioned from steel I-beams and thick timbers.
Seattle Cider’s flagship semisweet cider is widely available and very popular, but the
flamboyant use of uncommon ingredients, such as mint, basil and pumpkin spice, is how this
company built its reputation among cider aficionados. As you sip your way through as many as
a dozen different cider choices, enjoy a game of pool or shuffleboard, then munch on some
tasty grub from Bread and Circuses, a local food truck that operates a commissary kitchen on
site. Its offerings, which its proprietors have dubbed “circus-inspired street food,” is served

toasted ravioli and sourdough doughnuts. Don’t forsake the Brussels sprout Caesar salad and
always sample the seasonal cider selections.

cider (6.5 percent ABV) is dry and effervescent, with gin-like notes of juniper, lemon, citrus rind
and cucumber.

3. Cider Is Either Sweet or Dry
Most commercial ciders Americans have sipped are sweet. In fact, they’re almost on the level of
what Brent Miles, the head cider maker at Seattle Cider Company, calls “alco-pop.” On the
other side of the spectrum is dry cider, with all the sugar fermented out of it. “Dry ciders tend
to be much more complex,” he says, adding that although Americans mostly know cider as
being sticky-sweet, lots of visitors in his taproom are getting hooked on the dry stuff.
